Like so many great people, Tabby was a surprise. I did not plan on creating her. She appeared impulsively and without much thought.
Here’s how it happened.
I once worked with a fine lady who was a bit of a character. For the sake of anonymity, let’s call her Olliebolliebooboo. Could be anybody.
One day, Olliebolliebooboo was doing some very technical work between customers that involved browsing the internet. Or maybe it didn’t, but that’s what Olliebolliebooboo was doing.
She shouted to me. I was doing something equally unimportant.
“Hey, it looks like they know what the first domesticated cat was,” Olliebolliebooboo said. She said it very loudly. She always spoke loudly, like Vickie. But this is Tabby’s origin. “It was the first Tabby cat!”
Tabby. The name stuck with me. Why not have a coworker named Tabby? She could be short, like Olliebolliebooboo. Would she talk loudly as well? Hmmm.
So I drew her.
This was during the pandemic, so we all wore masks.
